Manchester Marathon
I have had a difficult few weeks, but today provided a much needed tonic. I ran as the 6 hour pacer in the Manchester marathon. I met so many people with inspirational stories. I had a few laughs and played some cheesy music. I have no idea how many children I gave hi-fives to. Thanks to Craig Mitchell who kept me company for the first 20 miles, I think we made a great team. Despite some anxiety about my ability to run a consistent pace for 26.2 miles, I am delighted to report that I smashed it. I ran the first half in 2:59:31 and finished in 5:59:41. The very best thing was the number of runners who came up and thanked me for helping them achieve their goal or for getting them to the finish. It is a feeling that far surpasses any I have experienced finishing a marathon before. Thanks to my amazing wife and daughter for coming to support, it was great to see you a few days on the route. Also to Sarah for getting up a stupid o'clock to drive to to Manchester. Since my last marathon I have lost both my mom to a long illness and my wonderful Mollie Dog. Today's marathon is dedicated to their memory. |
