What do you do for a living?
I write software for a local housing provider, it’s quite a varied job, no two days (or hours) are the same.
When and why did you start running?
I started running in 2012, I used to live on the top of the Ironbridge gorge at the time and started walking around the area but that soon progressed to running, which stopped when winter kicked in due to the miserable weather and injury.
I got a dog in 2017 and decided it was time to burn off my puppy fat so started running again, I run with the dog a few mornings a week.
What is the best advice you have ever been given about running?
The “Don’t over train” rule, it’s so easy to get into the zone and push yourself too much too quickly leading to injury and setting you back.
If you did not run what do you think you would do with your time instead?
Eat biscuits and maybe take the dog up a hill or something (with a packet of biscuits)
When did you join Wrekin Road Runners and what does belonging to the club mean to you?
I joined in summer 2018, I like the social aspect of the club, and running in a group helps me push myself, I’ve shaved a few mins off my 5K time and got close to 20 mins.
You always seem to be training, what is your favourite training session and where is your favourite place to run?
Hills, we’re extremely lucky to have the Wrekin and other Shropshire hills on our doorstep. There’s nothing more satisfying than getting to the top of a hill (although going up them isn’t very pleasant)
What running shoes do you wear?
I’ve recently switched from Adidas Ultraboost ST to the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20. I also got a pair of ASICS Gel DS for shorter faster runs.
What is your favourite piece of running kit?
My Apple Watch, I sync workouts to Strava and I like looking back at data (matched runs, segments etc). I’m a data geek.
Who or what inspires you and why?
In running? I think seeing other people run pushes me to run faster and further, Strava helps with that “Well done on a PB on that segment, but so and so ran it 14 secs faster than you” (I’m quite competitive)
What is your favourite (go to) food or drink after you have finished a long run?
I’m quite boring when it comes to post run food. It’s either a nice cup of tea and scrambled eggs on toast or squash and a number of handfuls of dry roasted nuts.
What has been your favourite race to date and why?
Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon (2019), it was my first race, I got the bug after it and booked loads more races.
I’ve done it all in the wrong order, booked a half marathon, followed by a 10 miler, then a 10k and then did my first Parkrun.
What event / race that you haven't done yet is on your bucket list?
I’d like to enter a marathon, but I don’t think I’m ready for it just yet.
Do you ever listen to music when you run? If so what do you like to listen to keep you going?
I listen to music when running alone, generally remixes of 90s and 00s pop music.
What is the funniest thing you have ever seen whilst out for a run?
Probably people staggering about on the walk of shame after a night out.
