Jumping for joy to be back racing this September
Racing is back this September at the Apley Estate Autumn Challenge. After a long wait, 350 runners will descend on the stunning private Apley Estate for a series of 5, 10 and 21K multi-terrain running races. The event is managed by local club the Wrekin Road Runners on behalf of the Apley Estate.
Runners take on the scenic and undulating multi-terrain course through the parklands of the estate on Sunday 26 September. Not normally open to the public this is a unique opportunity for athletes of all abilities to take in this magnificent part of Shropshire.
The event raises funds for the Church of St. Chad in Stockton. The church sits within the grounds of the Apley Estate and runners pass the building on one of the routes. Also this year the event will raise funds for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. For those curious about the work of the AIR Ambulance, they will be at the event with their Helipod.
Darren Poulton, Race Director, Wrekin Road Runners said, “The last 18 months have been hard for everyone and it's great to see races happening again around the country. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the Apley Estate for this safe and friendly outdoor event”.
Entries are still open though it's expected to sell out before the cut off date of 19 September.

2020 Event Cancellation
Dear fellow athletes,
We hope that you and your families are staying safe and well during this strange time.
At the time of writing we are approximately 100 days from when the Apley Estate Autumn Challenge is scheduled to take place. Like everyone our event team have watched with dismay as the 2020 racing calendar has been decimated, with little to look forward to for those that love running and competing. A few months ago, we took the decision to wait as long as we could before deciding on the fate of our 2020 event.
At this point in time we would normally start making financial commitments to all our amazing suppliers and event partners, and as a non-profit fundraising event we must keep a close eye on our costs. Because of the continued uncertainty around mass participation events and our financial commitments we have now taken the hard decision to cancel our 2020 event and focus our efforts on building an even better event in 2021.
Athletes with a current registration will automatically be transferred to the new event date of 26 September 2021. We understand that some runners may not wish to transfer to 2021 and we are therefore happy to provide a refund, all runners registered before 12 June 2020 will receive an email about this.
We hope you are finding ways to remain active and maintain your love of running. Hopefully before too long events will return, and you will find yourself fastening race numbers onto your running vests ready to compete once again.
Thank you for your support, stay safe and we hope to see you on Sunday 26 September 2021.

Challenge Accepted!
Local running club raises almost £4,000 for Stockton Church with fund raising races
Back in Autumn 2019 over 350 runners descended on the stunning Apley Estate for a series of running races known as the Apley Estate Autumn Challenge. The event is managed by local club the Wrekin Road Runners on behalf of the Apley Estate.
Runners chose from a 5K, 10K or 21K distance which took them on a scenic and undulating multi-terrain course through the parklands of the private Apley Estate. Not normally open to the public this was a unique opportunity for athletes of all abilities to take in this magnificent part of Shropshire. The event was sponsored by several local businesses and together with surplus from the athlete entry fees, the event raised £3907.42 for the Church of St. Chad in Stockton. The church sits within the grounds of the Apley Estate and runners pass the building on one of the routes. Lord Gavin Hamilton of The Apley Estate said, “On behalf of everyone at Stockton Church I would like to thank the event sponsors, the athletes and their supporters and the great efforts of the Wrekin Road Runners without whom this event could not go ahead”. The event name includes the word ‘challenge’, and thanks to the rain some parts of the course were a lot muddier than normal which certainly made the race live up to its name, but that didn’t stop athletes from enjoying their run. Upon completion all finishers received a medal, T-shirt and goody bag and category prizes were awarded. “I’m pleased to see that year on year this event is going from strength to strength. Despite the damp weather we have seen nothing but smiling faces as athletes complete their events. We are happy to be bringing this sell out event back again in 2020”, Darren Poulton, Race Director, Wrekin Road Runners. |
